Not so great things for the first edition BlackBerry PlayBook

I’ve read a bundle of reviews for PlayBook. There is no one want to offend those who think they are Neutralism (hint: most of them have an iPad or iPad 2). The differences among these reviews are how many missing things listed by them. I don’t plan to compose a review as there are so many to it, and fold all or part of the points of them as well.

As we know, it’s a better thing to give your suggestions or express your opinions to the vendors who serve products to customers. For example, iPad is launched without camera, on the contrary, iPad 2 hasn’t done this yet, though both of them can’t use flash at all. So, the following paragraph will show you what are PlayBook miss on the first edtion, keep in mind, if you are familiar with them, feeling free to skip it (maybe you will do that without the note).

Lack of Applications. This really needs to change moving forward to compete with the AppStore and MarketPlace.

Lack of Email Support. This really is huge. Not having a native pop/imap email client is one of the biggest fail factors yet. Perhaps on April 19 when the device launches, we will see some Android based email clients coming to save the day! Only time will tell.

Battery life is good, but not as good as the iPad. We only have had a few days of testing the device so stay tuned for a full comparison.

Initial updates are at 300MB so out of the box, you will need to be hooked up to broadband or have patience to allow for the full upgrade to complete. And at 300MB now, will this size grow down the road?

A reboot of the device, takes between 3 – 5 minutes.

No micro HDMI cable provided. (not the end of the world, but given the Motorola Atrix Smartphone comes supplied with one, it almost sets the bar) RIM product specialists advised a micro HDMI cable could be purchased for approximately $15 as an accessory.

We tried uploading a 1080p .mkv file and playback is not supported natively. Perhaps an application will provide support for the file type. We tried a 1GB file as well as an 8GB file. Xvid/Divx .avi files played with no issues.

Price. The price is identical to the USA iPad prices, but we need to keep in mind this tablet is quite a bit smaller. The price point should have been about $50 cheaper IMO. ($449 for 16GB sounds more ideal)

When selecting a wallpaper it automatically sets it to stretch it would appear. There are no settings to change this back to standard 1024×600.

Adobe Touch SDK allows developers to interact with desktop Photoshop through their tablet apps.

Ever since Steve Jobs shared his “Thoughts on Flash” with us almost a year ago, there has been a lot tools announced to enrich iDevices users’ media enjoyment, including Adobe Wallaby and the new Touch SDK.

At the beginning, let’s review the most important reason Apple do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads.

We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.

By contrary, however, rahter than the new way delivered by this SDK, mainstream customers would better enhance and enjoy the billions of images captured on devices of all types with program like Flash Gallery Classic, as it’s easy to use.

iPad 2 versus PlayBook

Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook will be available in more than 20,000 retail outlets in the U.S. and Canada. The BlackBerry PlayBook will start at $499 for the Wi-Fi version. The 16GB version will run $499, with 32GB and 64GB going for $599 and $699, respectively.

Motorola XOOM WiFi for $599 is $200 too much

Motorola has officially announced that the WiFi-only XOOM tablet will go on sale at several retailers on March 27th for $599. This entry-level XOOM model will be sold at Best Buy, Costco, Amazon, Walmart, Staple’s, Sam’s Club and RadioShack. This is good news and bad news for those wanting a XOOM without 3G/4G connectivity; while it is good this model is going on sale, it is $200 too much to compete with the entry-level iPad 2 that is selling like hotcakes.

The XOOM has a lot of hardware features that are quite powerful, but mainstream consumers don’t care about specifications. They are going to look at the XOOM for $599, and the iPad 2 for $499 and make a simple decision to get the latter. Motorola is playing catchup with Apple in the tablet space, and not even matching the iPad 2 price is good enough. This XOOM should be $399 to have a chance to compete.

It doesn’t help that the XOOM is not quite as solid as it should be, while the iPad 2 is, as one would expect from a second generation product. The excuse that the XOOM is the very first Android Honeycomb tablet to hit the market won’t hold water with most consumers. They want a product that works properly, and at a good price. The XOOM at $599 is neither.

Microsoft unveils its Windows Phone 7
