If Samsung wants to convince the world that it isn’t an Apple copycat, the Galaxy Note 8.0 is the best argument. Less than four months after the launch of Apple’s (almost) 8-inch tablet comes a new 8-inch tablet from Samsung. But, despite the obvious parallels, these are two distinct slates – outside and inside. Read on, as we compare the resolution of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 and Apple iPad mini.

Technically, the Galaxy Note’s display is larger and has a higher resolution than the iPad Mini’s. The 7.9-inch iPad’s 1024 x 768 pixel resolution gives it a pixel density of 163ppi; the 8.0-inch Note’s 1280 x 800 resolution means a 189ppi density. Looking at them side-by-side you can spot the differences, though overall both look great. The displays are bright and colorful with deep blacks and wide viewing angles. We did note that there is noticeable pixilation on the iPad’s screen that isn’t present on the Note, possibly to to the slightly higher pixel count. Apple and Samsung use different display technologies, so colors don’t look exactly the same when looking at the same content. With its 1.6-GHz quad-core processor and 2 GB of RAM, the Note 8.0 is fast and snappy, with no performance lags in our testing. The screen is fine for reading and video watching but a bit disappointing when viewed next to high-pixel-density screens such as the full-size iPad. (It’s worth mentioning, by the way, that the Note is a formidable video player, with built-in support for MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV, and DivX.) The 4600-millamp battery is impressive; we made it through an entire weekend without recharging. But the Note’s cameras—5-megapixel on the back, 1.3-megapixel on the front—are letdowns. Low-light photos were universally disappointing.

The iPad mini is already a popular iPad and may outsell full size iPad even without a high-resolution display. The lack of a Retina Display was one of the biggest complaints about the iPad mini, which Apple launched in October of 2012.Speculation of an iPad mini 2 with a Retina Display began swiftly, and it a new report from Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims Apple is working on the iPad mini 2 and will add a Retina Display to it.In the scenarios that Kuo outlines, the iPhone 5S release date and the iPad mini 2 release date fall in the same month. This could point to a joint event for the iPhone 5S and iPad mini 2 and a separate iPad 5 launch event. It’s not clear if this would push the iPad 5 release up to May as one insider suggested, or if it would arrive later in 2013 and closer to the holidays.
